Biophilic Outdoor Living Pavilion in Shoreditch, London

Project Summary

Client Location: Malaysia-based client managing a London property remotely
Property Location: Shoreditch, London
Project Type: Luxury biophilic outdoor living pavilion
Scope: Outdoor spatial planning, material coordination, lighting design, and bespoke furniture procurement
Timeline: 8–10 months

This project in Shoreditch explores how outdoor living can be redefined through a biophilic approach. Designed as a seamless extension of the home, the pavilion creates a calm, immersive environment within a dense urban setting.

The brief required a space that could feel both architectural and natural — structured enough to reflect the property, yet soft enough to support relaxation. The result is a carefully balanced outdoor living area that connects material, planting, and layout into a cohesive experience.

Working with an overseas client, the design process focused on clarity, precision, and visual consistency. Every element was resolved in advance to ensure the final outcome felt effortless, refined, and easy to use.

Client Brief

The client wanted a private outdoor retreat that would introduce calm into a busy London lifestyle. The space needed to function as both a personal escape and a setting for informal gatherings.

The key requirements included:

  • A strong connection to nature through planting and materials
  • A layout that supports both quiet use and social interaction
  • A refined, low-maintenance finish suitable for remote management
  • A clear visual identity that feels luxurious but not excessive

To achieve this, the design focused on combining architectural clarity with natural softness, ensuring the pavilion feels open, grounded, and balanced.

Layout Strategy

The pavilion was organised to create a fluid transition between interior and exterior zones. A glazed boundary allows uninterrupted views across the garden, ensuring the outdoor space feels like a natural continuation of the home.

Seating areas were positioned to support multiple uses — from quiet relaxation to small gatherings — without overcrowding the layout. Low furniture and open circulation paths help maintain a sense of space and movement.

This approach to Space Planning ensures the environment remains flexible while still feeling intentional and well-structured.

Material & Planting Design

The material palette was selected to reinforce a natural, calming atmosphere. Timber surfaces introduce warmth, while stone elements provide texture and permanence. Together, they create a grounded base for the pavilion.

Planting plays a central role in shaping the space. Vertical greenery and layered planting soften architectural edges, introduce movement, and enhance the sensory experience of the garden.

Bespoke seating and tables were sourced through a curated Procurement process, ensuring scale, comfort, and material consistency across the space.

Lighting Approach

Lighting was designed to enhance atmosphere without dominating the space. Subtle, layered illumination allows the pavilion to transition naturally from day to evening.

Low-level lighting defines pathways and seating areas, while soft ambient lighting highlights textures in the planting and architectural surfaces. The goal was to create depth and warmth without visual clutter.

This considered Lighting Design approach ensures the space remains usable and inviting at all times of day.

The Outcome

The completed pavilion delivers a calm, immersive outdoor environment that enhances the overall property. It feels private yet open, minimal yet layered — a balance that defines successful biophilic design.

The combination of natural materials, thoughtful layout, and controlled lighting creates a space that supports both everyday use and occasional entertaining without compromise.

For international clients, this level of clarity in design development ensures confidence throughout the process and a result that aligns fully with the original vision.
