At Oraanj, we design interiors that harmoniously blend architecture, nature, and wellbeing. This biophilic outdoor living space in Shoreditch, London, was created to foster calm, connection, and understated luxury.

Working with a Malaysia-based client managing a London property remotely, we developed an indoor–outdoor pavilion that extends the home’s living experience into a tranquil, resort-inspired environment. Every detail, from natural materials to spatial layout, was curated to evoke serenity, comfort, and sophistication.

Client Brief

The client sought a luxurious outdoor living environment that would:

• Promote relaxation and a sense of retreat within the city
• Integrate natural materials and textures for a biophilic experience
• Offer both functional seating and aesthetic focal points for social gatherings

Our objective was to create a seamless indoor–outdoor space that balances modern architectural lines with natural elements and comfort.

Spatial Planning and Layout

The pavilion layout was designed to encourage fluid movement between interior and exterior areas.

A glass-enclosed structure frames the landscaped courtyard, allowing uninterrupted views and visual continuity. Seating zones were organised for both private relaxation and group gatherings, while low tables and layered furniture arrangements support versatile use.

Circulation paths are carefully considered to maintain openness, ensuring the space feels expansive and welcoming.

Materials and Biophilic Elements

Materiality plays a central role in achieving a natural, calming environment.

Warm timber decking, stone feature walls, and vertical garden installations establish a tactile connection to nature. Soft furnishings and layered textures add comfort while maintaining a serene, spa-like atmosphere.

Custom furniture was designed to complement the pavilion’s proportions and materials, enhancing both functionality and visual cohesion. A sculptural Buddha wall relief serves as a focal point, reinforcing the tranquil character of the space.

Lighting and Atmosphere

Lighting was integrated to support both functionality and mood.

Soft ambient lighting highlights architectural and natural elements without overpowering the environment. Layered fixtures, including low-level accent lights and subtle overhead illumination, ensure the pavilion remains inviting from day to evening.

The combination of natural light during the day and carefully designed evening illumination enhances the biophilic experience and highlights textures, materials, and architectural lines.
